This course is designed to explore the principles, strategies, and methods for fostering inclusive learning environments through effective teaching practices and assessment strategies. The course delves into various pedagogical approaches, such as culturally responsive pedagogy, explicit teaching, trauma-informed pedagogy, and the pedagogy of care, that can support academic and social outcomes for students with diverse educational needs. Educators will explore evidence-based strategies for inclusive teaching and explore methods for differentiating teaching and fostering collaboration among students. They will also learn about inclusive assessment practices that are culturally responsive, and accurately represent student learning. They will explore alternative assessment methods, such as portfolios, projects, and performance assessments that provide students with multiple ways to demonstrate their understanding and skills and interrogate the role students themselves can play in assessment. Educators will investigate the use of data as a diagnostic, formative and summative tool. They will investigate individual learning plans (ILPs) and use their knowledge of inclusive practices across curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and environment to create ILPs and evaluate their effectiveness. Educators will have the opportunity to critically reflect on their own teaching and assessment practices and continue to develop their PoPP inquiry. They will reflect upon the progress of their inquiries and develop further action plans for implementing inclusive strategies in their classrooms. |
